What Is Position Zero in Google Search?

You've typed something into Google and the answer appeared before the list even started. Before you clicked anything. Before you scrolled. Just... there, at the top, already answered.
That's Position Zero. And if you've noticed it but never thought too hard about what it means for your business, this is worth two minutes of your time.
What is Position Zero in Google search?
Position Zero is the single answer that appears above the traditional list of Google results - already summarised, already selected, before anyone has to click.
It sits in what Google calls a Featured Snippet: a box at the very top of the page that pulls a direct answer from a website and displays it immediately. No clicking required.
It's also the answer ChatGPT may give as its only response to a query. When someone asks an AI assistant a question, it doesn't return a list of ten blue links. It gives one answer. Position Zero is where that answer often comes from.
For small businesses, this matters because the playing field is genuinely level here. Position Zero isn't won with the biggest budget. It's won with the clearest answer.
Why does Position Zero matter more than position one?
Position one used to be the prize. It's still valuable. But here's the thing: Position Zero sits above position one. It's the answer before the answers.
On the first episode of Reaching for Position Zero, my co-host Kev summed it up perfectly: "position one is kind of the first loser. I think that’s what they call it." Brutal, but accurate. I had been trying to find a polite way to say that for months.
If someone else’s content is already answering the question in the box at the top, the rest of the list barely gets a look-in.
In AI search, it goes further. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's own AI Overviews don't return ranked lists. They synthesise one answer.
If your content isn't clear and direct enough to be that answer, you're invisible.
Can a small business reach Position Zero?
Yes. Genuinely, yes - and this is where it gets interesting.
Position Zero isn't a reward for the biggest website or the largest ad budget. It's a reward for clarity. Google extracts answers from pages that answer questions directly, simply, and completely. A local heating engineer with a well-written FAQ page can beat a national brand to that spot.
The same principle applies in AI search. AI engines summarise the clearest, most useful content they can find. If your page answers a question better than anyone else's, it gets used.
Small businesses can absolutely win this. They often have an advantage: they're specific, they're local, and they know their customers' questions intimately.
That's precisely what answer engines are looking for.
What do I do this week to start understanding Position Zero?
One thing. That's all.
Next time you search for anything - a recipe, a local service, how to fix something - notice what appears before the list. See if there's a box at the top with an answer already in it (and also some websites already lined up as the 'sources').
Read what it says and ask yourself: what made that the answer?
Start seeing it in the wild (and okay sometimes the 'sponsored ads' still get the very top slot but Position Zero is very close behind). Once you do, you'll start thinking differently about your own website content. And that's where the opportunity begins.

TL;DR Speed Read
Position Zero is the single answer that appears above Google's search results - already summarised, already selected, before anyone clicks. It's also the composite answer AI tools like ChatGPT serve as their only response. Small businesses can reach it not with budget, but with clarity.
FAQs
What is a Featured Snippet?
A Featured Snippet is the box Google places at the very top of search results, showing a direct answer pulled from a web page. It's the most common form of Position Zero.
Is Position Zero the same as an AI Overview?
Not exactly. Featured Snippets have been around for years. AI Overviews are Google's newer AI-generated summaries at the top of results. Both occupy the same prime real estate - above the traditional list - but they work differently. The principle of writing clearly to reach both is the same.
Does Position Zero actually drive clicks?
It depends on the query. For simple factual answers, some people get what they need without clicking. For more complex topics, Position Zero often builds enough trust that people do click through. For small businesses, appearing at Position Zero is valuable whether or not every searcher clicks.
How do I write content that can reach Position Zero?
Answer one question at a time. Be direct and clear. Don't bury the answer. Use natural language - write the way a real person would ask the question. Structured pages with clear headings and short, specific answers perform best.
Does this apply to voice search too?
Yes. Voice search and AI assistants pull from the same pool of clear, well-structured answers. If your content is Position Zero-ready, it's also better placed for voice and AI queries.
